Thank you for your insightful essay. As someone trying to break into speculative fiction and as a person of color, it really struck a chord. I remembered comments given to me at a conference about my YA fantasy. The agent said that my book wasn’t edgy enough because the protagonist, a Latina, was too close to her mother. She wanted her make snarky remarks and sound less hopeful about the relationship. After reading your article I realized that the reason I felt uncomfortable with that note was the fact that I never would have thought to mouth off and it’s a particularly Latin thing to think that way. I hope we can make room for that reality in speculative fiction. All girls can’t be Bella!
